Caring for your Spine
Water Therapy and The Spine

Kickboard:  The kickboard is used to help isolate leg muscles.  It provides some buoyancy to the upper extremities and the torso.  It can be used for balance training.

Fins:  Fins are great for strengthening the muscles of the foot and ankle.  They can be particularly helpful for foot drop rehabilitation.  Fins provide good resistance to the foot during the act of lifting the foot up (dorsiflexion).  They will provide more resistance during dorsiflexion than the water booties.  Simple exercises can be performed while sitting or hanging onto to the side of a pool.

Spinning aquacycles: A spinning cycle is placed in the shallow end of the pool for this new type of aerobic exercise program. The resistance provided by pedaling under water provides an invigorating exercise. This is not commonly found in local pools or spas, however someone with back problems should be vary cautious with any exercise program. If available, spinning under water is a great training program for the novice or expert.

Where can I go for more Information about Water Therapy Programs?

If you would like to consider getting involved in a supervised water therapy program contact your local Arthritis Foundation chapter and inquire about the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program (AFAP).  This is a water exercise program developed for individuals with arthritis and related conditions, including chronic back pain.  Classes are usually about 45 to 60 minutes in length.  Many YMCAs offer these programs.
